Array of Attractions Entices Tourists

Where to start with the Tucson region's tourism portfolio?

How about this: You'd be hard-pressed just about anywhere else to find such a broad array of attractions within the pleasant, brief drive you have from any spot in Tucson.

Who better to get the spiel from than a resort concierge? Cue Johnny Fenton. She's the concierge at Omni Tucson National Resort.

Within a half hour to an hour of most places in Tucson, you can hike in our five mountain ranges, go birding, go to the opera or symphony, eat at the oldest Mexican restaurant, visit the largest private air museum, play in the casinos, enjoy wineries, go on mine tours, fly in a balloon, stay at a dude ranch and absorb the history, said Fenton, a concierge for 15 years.

How many other Top 50 biggest cities in America have a national park right at the city limits? Or Sabino Canyon as a neighborhood escape?

Down the road, Old West enthusiasts have Bisbee, Tombstone, Tubac and Tumacacori. An Enigma decoding machine from World War II is on display at the U.S. Army Intelligence Museum at Fort Huachuca. Kartchner Caverns offers one of the world's most spectacular cavern tours.

We're creating our own 8th wonder of the world, said Tom Moulton, Pima County's director of economic development and tourism.

Those who'd rather stay closer to town can drop by Mission San Xavier del Bac, and you don't even have to leave downtown Tucson to stroll through the 19th-century adobe Barrio Viejo or Victorian El Presidio neighborhoods.

I call this place Cactus Camelot, Fenton said. In the U.S., few places rival Tucson for the persity of activities you can sample. It's an hourly, moment-to-moment challenge to put a package together to get a guest out to enjoy our sense of place.
